The Beginning of Better Days

The Beginning of Better Days
by Joseph Smith
with insights from
Virginia Peirce and Sheri Dew

Have you heard of this book?  I have.  Over and over and over again and I finally read the first essay by Virginia Peirce which perked my interest but not enough to rant and rave (perhaps yet) like so many others.  I will read the book in its entirety prior to my saying much about it.  I had to lend it to a neighbor for it is now a bookclub book for our Relief Society.  Not only that, but we are reading it one piece at a time and it will take us a minimum of six months (for there are six lectures) to get to the end.  The RS president of our ward said she read chapter three and didn't understand a word of it.  How curious.  What could Joseph Smith tell Relief Society sisters that we could not understand, I wonder.  I am interested and I thought I would share my find with you.  I don't like that it really isn't very many words yet hammed up and prettified at our expense and only available in hardback for a lofty $18.  It could be a cheap book if they would let it be and I find church books to be the most unavailable and rank the highest of my book expenditures.  It is cheapest at Barnes and Noble if you order online ($12.50) but free shipping requires a $25 minimum purchase.  It is available on ebooks for a little less, I believe.  Nevertheless, tell me what you learn of this book.  I would love further discussions and shared insights, like always.

How is everybody?  I suppose our bookclub just doesn't have the cutting edge anymore.  What would?   Tell me about yourselves.

Hello! I have heard of this book and have a copy setting on my night stand. Its been several months since I've read it, so I will review. Would love to discuss! A few points of interest regarding the prettified book...

1. a couple of years ago my brother scott was on some sort of panel/discussion group that evaluated what parts of the meeting minutes to put in the book. When he told me about this, I asked him more. He said that he was under some sort of confidentiality agreement and could not tell me much. At this point I wanted to put him in a headlock and make him tell me everything, I refrained. He did tell me that there were some portions of the minutes which were considered controversial and that those controversies may or may not remain in the forth-coming book.

2. The whole of the minutes document are available to read on josephsmithpapers.org free of charge... I have been comparing between the book and the actual document and there are parts of the whole document not included in the book. I'm reading with curiosity at this point comparing what is and what is not included in the book...

talk to you soon,
acw

Wow, that is all so interesting. I can't believe I haven't even heard of this book. It sounds like a fun read. I hope I can get a hold of it. If nothing else there is always interlibrary loan, which for me is only one dollar! :) Thanks for sharing that interesting extra info Amie!
