January Book

Hi girls!

I hope you are enjoying the relief from the holidays. I know I am! There is nothing like nothing going on. Since I am a mother there is plenty going on when there is nothing going on!

I really wanted to read Don Quixote this month, but my library seems to have one copy, which is checked out. I am also going to turn on the repeat button which says, "it is hard to read right now." IT IS! But my kids elementary school is having their reading incentive program on Percy Jackson so I am going to try to read The Lightning Thief sometime soon. Will I get it done in two weeks? I doubt it. But maybe I can get my hands on it by then. I am sorry this is so late being posted. I kid you not, I have been trying to choose for about a week now. I was trying to decide on something on my shelf, since I missed getting one at the library last week. Today it finally dawned on me that this would be a rational choice for me, so I can get what's going on at my kids school.

I also recommend Rock Solid Relationships by Wendy Watson Nelson. I love this book and plan to read it bit by bit again this month. And lastly, please send recommendations! I am slow at reading them, but I love ideas, which is why I am hard pressed to pick a book myself. I usually read by word of mouth! :) Happy January!

Rushing as always!

Lindsay, looking forward to this read. This is a book Brion read aloud to my kids recently. Thanks!

Lindsay,

Hi! Klark is on book three and I have been curious about it. I almost bought it once - until I found out it was a series (for some reason series are a turn off for me). I want to read it. I wonder if there is a waiting list considering our library is puny and it is a popular book. Thanks! And I like the other suggestion as well. Right now, I am reading Bud Not Buddy to the boys and we are really enjoying it. You read that one, right? I like it. And I am trying again to read the Infinate Atonement (only on p 80) and I really like it too. It is a slow read for me but worthwhile.

Hi girls!

I did read the Lightening Thief, and the second and third book too. They are quick reads. I am going to post a bullet list mostly only of the things I liked about the books.

1. I love the author's writing style; witty to be precise. I liked that his humor was modern and would appeal to youth, whom the book was written for. it often made me smile. That's a good thing.

2. I liked that the writing style is somewhat simple and age appropriate for youth. I think it would appeal to youth in today's society.

3. This book is quick paced, going from adventure to adventure quickly, which is just what my son likes. He likes it to keep moving, and this book sure does. It had very little romance, also a plus in his mind.

4. I liked talking about this book with my boys,a lot.

5. I like the imperfectness of Percy Jackson (a lot more than the imperfectness of Greek Gods, but then that is Greek mythology's fault, not the authors).

6. I liked that the author wrote a fast paced fiction book appealing to youth that went ahead and helped them learn about Greek mythology while they are at it.

7. I like knowing about authors as real people of stories they write from their hearts. I love knowing that Rick Riordan got his idea for Camp Half Blood by being a summer camp counselor once. I like knowing his favorite characters are Grover and Tyson (Tyson shows up in the second book). I like knowing that he taught middle school and has always loved Greek Mythology, and that he found his students loved it too. I like to imagine him being a teacher as good as Chiron.

8. I liked Chiron.

9. I like that within the first few chapters of the second book in the series I could tell that this book was even better crafted than the first. I like to see a writer improve!

10. I liked that I was surprised by the end of the third book, even if it is partially because I am not extremely familiar with Greek mythology.

11. I like that Riordan touches well on real life human feelings and situations through fantasy, touching lightly but realistically for kids.

12. I am not fond of picking on writing style or plot weaknesses, blah blah blah, but I will say the infidelity of the Gods was irritating to me, especially at first. I guess I am glad to know that Greek mythology is just that, mythology! For the most part, I think Riordan handled this topic as well as could be expected for a young adult book. I still have mixed feelings about this however.

13. I liked that one chapter was just about right for a nursing session-- short.

14. Pressing repeat here, but I loved discussing this book with the boys the most, comparing notes and "racing" to finish with my oldest. He enjoyed it too.

Happy February!
