Chains

Hi girls, I am posting the June book as Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson. I really loved and learned from this book, and it's sequel, Forge. I look forward to the third book, Ashes. These books talk about the coming of our country to freedom and the involvement of blacks, both free and slaves. If you choose to read it I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Wow, you just had a baby and you still posted a book. I am SO glad and that book looks like a great one. I am going to look for it now. (I got a gift certificate from Klark's teacher for helping in the classroom so if my library doesn't have it, I might buy it). Yes, it is true that the teacher should NOT be giving ME a gift - she is an amazing woman. The kind of person who changes lives by touching lives. Thank you for the book recommendation and CONGRATULATIONS!

Hey, I finished the book "Chains" and think it is an excellent book. I will save detailed reviews until others have had their month to read it. But golly, my library does not have the sequel. How can that be when the ending leaves so much story to be told. Every reader would want the sequel - right?

Summer time is absolutely exhausting! I find myself increasingly impatient for lack of a moment to myself. Comments? Advise? Tips?

Needing to mop the floor - AGAIN,
ShaLisa

Love the flower background - thanks.

I finished Chains a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it. In particular I liked the excerpts from newspaper and letters during the time period in which the book was written. One line in the book that has stuck with me and I find it popping into my mind occasionally since finishing the book the book is: People see me as a scar and they do not see the girl underneath that scar. That is not a direct quote from the book but something to that effect. Its made me think about my first blush judgments of people I meet. I enjoyed the book so much that I went out and found forge right after finishing chains. I hope you are all having a great summer. I had a chance to run into a couple of you in person in the last six weeks or so (Alisha, Leslie) It was a treat to visit face to face. In other news, I am having a bouncing baby boy come November :)

Hi all. I also loved the book. It was a very worthwhile read and I am not exactly sure what to say about it. It is interesting how people treated slaves so differently. I have wondered in the past if select individuals were brought up to treat slaves poorly and did even if it was contrary to their nature. Brainwashed, Layne would say. I don't think so anymore. People who know, know and it was these people who brought about change. The story about the little sister was extremely sad to me and the bond between the sisters was impressionable. And to think, she should have been free the entire time!

Amie, CONGRATULATIONS! I am so happy for you. And do you say "bouncing" baby boy because he is moving a lot already? I wanted to ask you about your myraids of tulips and if they were as abundant and beautiful as you hoped. Congratulations again!

Amy, welcome home from Germany. Wow, that sounds so exciting. I want to hear more details.

I am due in a month (Aug. 7, to be exact) and have never had such an uncomfortable pregnancy. I am so swollen, typing this really hurts.

Wanting Forged,
ShaLisa

ShaLisa, I concur with your comments. I think you are right about people knowing right from wrong. It pains me to think of people trapped in slavery. You will like forge it is also excellent. Hang in there with your pregnancy, in the end to me every day feels like three weeks. My tulips were lovely. They brought me a lot of joy when I was feeling terrible with morning (aka all day) sickness.
