October Book

Hi Girls,
This month I am going to recommend the book These Is My Words by Nancy Turner. I have wanted to read this book for awhile, I hope its something you will enjoy. I have to confess, I haven't finished any of the books since we read the invisible wall. I am feeling so behind. A few of these books are stacked partially read on my dresser. Did you all have a good conference weekend? I enjoy it very much.

Hoping to finish and keep up,
Amie

Amie,
I have this book on hold and I thank you. It must be fairly popular because I am number 27 on the waiting list. I may be late (again) but it may give me time to finish the Little Prince (I love what I have read so far!).

I don't think I like Nocolas Sparks - does anyone else have an opinion of him? Our ward bookclub is reading his Three Weeks With My Brother and I think I will opt out of this one unless someone believes it is worthwhile. Maybe I can try to skim it - I am not a good skimmer. I like to read every word, well, of a good book that is.

With So Much to Read,
ShaLisa

I haven't started yet, I hope to get the book in the next few days, I hope it wasn't too sad for your taste. I'll get back to you when I read, what are we reading for november?

I had a hard time with following the language in this book and then it was due back at the library and has quite a few people on hold for it. I'll have to try to get it again.

Now that some time has passed I think I can say more about this book. I was very emotionally involved in this book and it elicited more saddness than other emotions and I wasn't sure if I liked being made sad. The book did hold me, however, once I was into it. In fact, I read that book faster than I have others in a long time because I was so interested. I liked the romance with the Captain and sometimes felt bad she didn't have a better understanding of marriage or what to expect in her man. She worked SO HARD and that was inspiring somehow. She learned. She sacrificed. She loved and she lost so many. She was incredibly tough. I loved that people gave of themselves endlessly to save and help loved ones - I compare that to the huge favor it feels like I am asking when I need someone to watch my children for an hour twice a year. Sometimes I feel like I am asking a huge favor when I ask my husband to watch them for an hour so I can go grocery shopping alone. Why? I thought Felicity's part in the story was humorous (how sad for her husband)and it was touching to me to think of the different ways people mourned (her mother, her brother, her beloved sister-in-law). I think the heroine saw herself as anything but heroic and yet SHE WAS. She was wholesome and full of love and zeal and worked hard for those she cared so desperately about. A remarkable woman, indeed.

I finished this book in November, and while it is sad, heartbreaking and unbelievable in trials and tribulations for Sarah, I LOVED this book. She is a character I will miss. Oh, where to start. I was emotionally involved in this book. I like to read about women like Sarah. She is one of those women who, despite it all have substance, character, courage, perspective and the list goes on and on. Early in the book I recognized her struggle coming to terms with fight/surrender particularly with her relationship to Jack. I love Jack by the way. One thing I liked about Sarah is that she just takes care of business. She does what she has to do, I want to be that brave. I don't think I am.
I really related to her writings on motherhood, there were so many little nuggets in there that I would like to write down, the descriptions were just so perfect. I liked reading about her life as a wife and mother.
Did you pick up on the comparison between Jack/Sarah and Rhett and Scarlett? That comparison while I can see it just annoyed me. I haven't read gone with the wind for years but all I remember about Scarlett is that she is a spoiled brat and thinking Rhett was an idiot for hanging on for so long. I did read the sequel Scarlett and I remember liking that and liking Scarlett better after reading it.
